Brugmansias

These plants containerize well but require regular, heavy feeding to consistently produce the showy, trumpet shaped, pendant flowers. Temperature & growing conditions can cause great variation in the size & color of the flowers. Most are intoxicatingly fragrant at night! In many parts of the world, these plants are still a source of pharmaceutical tropane alkaloids such as scopolamine and atropine. This deadly toxic genus does not deserve the negative press it has been getting.

To assist you with the identification of Brugmansia species and hybrids, there is a key on the back page of our printed catalog catalogue that corresponds with our more detailed descriptions. These illustrations are from the fantastic German book "Engelstrompeten" by Dr. Hans-Georg Preissel. We are exited to offer this book in our catalogue and use the drawings with permission granted from Ulmer Publishing and Dr. Preissel. This is a must have for Brugmansia & Datura lovers!!! See Misc. Products Section for ordering information.

Carefully removing the woody pericarp from the seed greatly increases the germination rate. We are also having good success feeding these plants with "systemic rose fertilizer" to keep them green and pest-free! This is another good reason not to eat our Brugmansias!!!

IMPORTANT: This update contains a re-revised identification of several cultivars & species that we and others have mis-identified in the past. We will list the new names and give our reasons for the changes (which could keep changing until we get it right!). We are working on a laminated key for identification of Brugmansia species, hybrids and cultivars in the field. Stay tuned!!
